Rockin' Rhythm & Blues

The Uptown Savages are Milwaukee’s premier retro/roots rockin’ combo. The band, comprised of veteran Milwaukee musicians, performs greasy, rockin’, Rhythm & Blues music, 1950s style. Think pulsating piano rhythms, powerful blues shouting, guitar playing that is both hot AND cool, wailing sax and one of the best rhythm sections in the Midwest.

The Uptown Savages have 2 full-length releases with plans to begin a third in 2012. The band also has released a 7” single and appea
rs on compilations released by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in Memphis and Milwaukee’s own WMSE 91.7 fm. The Uptown Savages have received airplay and have charted on campus and community radio all over the world. They’ve performed at clubs, festivals and events from Chicago to Minneapolis including Milwaukee’s Summerfest, Bastille Days and Riversplash, among many others. The group has also performed at both of Oneida Casino’s Rockin’ Fifties Festivals. Sharp dress combined with great musicianship and a fantastic repertoire, the Uptown Savages always bring a party to the stage.

Rock 'N' Roll With You, The Uptown Savages' Third Full Length Album

Our third full length album, Rock 'N' Roll With You is a milestone 15 years in the making. After formation in 1999, it took 2 years to release our first album, "Rocket Drivin' Daddy", representative of the style of the band at the time. Cuts like "Caddilac Baby", "My Kinda Fun", and the titular "Rocket' Drivin' Daddy" featuring the chicken pickin' of Bobby Rivera and slap bass of Matt The Ratt Davis, gave the album a heavy throwback to the band's Rockabilly roots.

5 years and one lineup change later, The Uptown Savages hit the ground running with "Crazy, Crazy, Crazy". The opening track "Air Raid" kicked the album into high gear straight from the start. This newest album was a bit more horn driven and seemed to have more of an influence from the music that gave birth to Rock 'n' Roll: Jump Blues and Rhythm & Blues. A great cover of Guitar Slim's "Well I Done Got Over It" was a great example of this influence.

Another 8 years later, we are proud to release "Rock 'N' Roll With You", once again on the historic Cuca Records label. This newest album showcases the band in its freshest incarnation and is still just as rockin' as ever before. Jonny Z and Jack Stewart penned most of the songs on the album, Andrew Spadafora and Mary Rodgers absolutely rip it up on saxes, and Dave Smith, Bill Backes and Peter Balistreri carry on the rhythm that puts the dancers to work. Heavily tinged by the greats from R&B and Jump Blues influence, The Uptown Savages are still, and always will be,  Rock 'N' Roll.
